S.T.E.M.agination Station Oz-Themed Family Night

THANK YOU to everyone who supported our Wizard of Oz STEMagination Station Family Night!
For those of you who made donations, attended, or helped in any way, please know how much we appreciate you.  Our event was a huge success and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as we did!

Lift Dorothy's House off of the Wicked Witch Using a hand-made pulley system

Before we could engineer our pulley systems, students had to examine PERSPECTIVE by having the Wicked Witch of the West make a plea for the munchkins to help lift Dorothy's house off of her sister who was trapped underneath.  See them using the app, Face Talker, to virtually speak to the munchkins and make their pleas!

Inspired by the new Disney hit, Frozen, (and the fact that we've been stuck in the Chicago Polar Vortex), we engaged in a STEM challenge centered on the concept of INSULATION.  See the insulation creations students worked together to design in order to keep their ice cubes frozen for the longest period of time!

Snapshots from our ICE challenge

Mrs. Petlak & Mrs. Weinstein are trying to earn an ICE scholarship to attend a STEM/differentiation conference this summer to make STEMagination Station even better.  See the application video we created that features our Frozen-inspired, ice-themed challenge!

See Us sing 'In SUmmer" from Frozen!

-Alice in Wonderland-

We will experience many adventures while in Wonderland.
Stay tuned for snapshots from our wondrous STEM adventures with Alice & her friends!

CHallenge #2: Build a House of Cards

-hansel & gretel-

Continuing our pursuit of "SWEET SCIENCE," we continued our explorations by reading the classic tale of Hansel and Gretel.  This exposed children to the literature and opened discussion and brainstorming about the solubility of the sweet materials used to create the witch's child-luring yummy cottage!

-the gingerbread man-

Challenge #1: Build a waterproof device to help the Gingerbread Man cross the river without the fox.

Challenge #2: Build a trap to help the fox & other animals trap the GINGERBREAD MAN

-RAPUNZEL-

We kicked off our STEMagination adventures with the tale of Rapunzel.  Watch the story of Rapunzel by clicking the video below. See how we learn about & use the engineering design process for our challenges!

rapunzel Challenge #1: tower

Build the tallest free-standing tower using only marshmallows and dried spaghetti.

Rapunzel Challenge #2: hair

Create the strongest hair (at least 2 feet long) using only Pull-n-Peel Twizzlers, to be measured by number of dimes the hair will hold.
